英語英文学科で卒業論文を書くとは…….

 英語英文学科では、3つの専門分野の中で、学生たちがそれぞれの興味・関心に応じて多彩なテーマで英語の卒業論文を書いています。ここでは、実際に今まで提出された卒論についてご紹介したいと思います。
 まずその前に、英語で論文を書くなんてできるかなあ…と思う人もいるかもしれません。答は “Yes!”です。4年次での卒論作成に向けて、英語英文学科では2年次3年次に、専門の勉強と並行して、英語でのアカデミック・ライティングおよびクリティカル・リーディングの学習もします。そうやって論文を書く準備を整えていくのです。
 英語で卒論を書き終えるという経験によって、学生たちは何ものにも代えがたい大きな達成感を得て、社会に旅立ちます。

 英語学・英語教育学

 英語という言語について知りたい、考えたい――英語学・英語教育の分野では、英語の文法・語彙・意味や音声についての研究、あるいは英語教育をめぐる様々な問題の研究ができます。 
 単語の成り立ちを探る、不定詞と動名詞を比較する、英語日本語のイントネーションを比較するなどのほか、童謡とポップスを使って日英の音節構造の違いを比較し、最近の英語の歌の特徴を分析したといった例もあります。調べたことを教育の現場に生かすという視点から卒論に取り組む人もいます。

 英米文学

 今ここにいながらにして、想像力を羽ばたかせ時空を超える――英米文学の分野では、イギリス・アメリカ・アイルランド文学を中心として、詩・演劇・小説をていねいに読み、作品世界や時代背景、また作家像について理解を深めます。
 恋愛詩とその背景を研究したり、自然の表象、女性の描き方、ヒーローの描き方、家族像など、関心のあるテーマで作品を読み解いたりします。シェイクスピア劇における衣装の役割や、『ドラキュラ』と帝国主義の関係について論文を書いた人もいます。

 メディア・コミュニケーション

 メディアが取り上げる現代社会の問題とは何か?そして、それはどのように伝えられているのか?―――メディア・コミュニケーションの分野では、映像、新聞、ネットなどメディアの世界で現代社会の問題が、どのように英語で伝えられているのかを実践的に考察していきます。
 メディアによって作られたステレオタイプのイメージの問題、メディアを通した言葉の分析、環境をめぐる様々な課題などを卒論のテーマとすることができます。
