THE SOCIETY OF THE SACRED HEART AROUND THE WORLD

Mother House: Rome     Provinces: 35     Countries: 41

THE JAPAN PROVINCE

Inspired by the urge to make known God's love for each person through the education of young women, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat founded the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1800, initially in France which was in a chaotic situation after the French Revolution.

The Society of the Sacred Heart looks at the realities of the world and listens through contemplative prayer to the calls of Christ manifested in them. In response to these calls, its members are sent wherever there are needs. Therefore, since the time of its foundation, one marked characteristic of the Society of the Sacred Heart has been internationality. Now, the 2800 Religious of the Sacred Heart in 41 countries are endeavoring to respond to the needs of today's world, living in interdependence and solidarity as an international community.

Some 130 Sacred Heart sisters in the Japan Province are working towards the betterment of society through various kinds of work: education (College, Specialized Schools, Primary, Middle and High Schools, International School), pastoral ministry in parishes, spiritual direction, counseling, services related to foreign workers, HIV patients, and the homeless. Seven Japanese sisters are serving overseas, in the following countries: The Philippines, Italy,Taiwan, Indonesia, and Uganda.
