Study Location:   The field research was carried out in Kathmandu city and three villages in the district of Chitwan, western Nepal.

Collaborative Focus:   Students from Japan were partnered with students from National College, Kathmandu, an affiliate of Kathmandu University. Students and professors collaborated on data collection in four different communities using the questionnaire developed. They also listened to lectures and students, had various leadership opportunities.
The theme of the research was sustainable society. The aims of the field research included:
    i.   To gather data on the effects of tourism for sustainable society for urban and rural communities
ii.   To gather data on what women need in order to develop a successful business.

Study Components:   Introductory lectures from Women Entrepreneur’s Association of Nepal (FWEAN), Clean Locomotive Women Entrepreneurs, Kathmandu Tourism Association and Chitwan Tourism gave background information through presentations on the two research areas.

Data Collection on Women’s Business and Tourism:   Student partners along with professors conducted interviews in communities in Kathmandu and Chitwan district. A total of 61 women subjects answered the questionnaire on women’s business, and 105 male and female subjects answered the questionnaire on tourism development. Each evening, students held discussions and gave presentations on the day’s findings. This sharing of information gave students opportunities to think critically, build knowledge and develop leadership skills. As a follow-up to evening discussion sessions, web blogs were written to document each day’s research activities.
