Nepal Field Study Program

February 28 to March 10, 2014

Introduction
This year marked the fourth year of the Nepal Field Study Program for students at the University of the Sacred Heart. The theme for the program during these four years has centered on “Sustainable Development.” The purpose of this field study program is to understand the problems and challenges of achieving sustainable development, especially in a developing country, like Nepal. The research this year targeted local communities in both urban and rural areas of Nepal.

Student Collaboration :   One of the unique features of our program is “student collaboration.” Our collaboration includes students from the University of the Sacred Heart and Waseda University in Tokyo, and students from National College in Kathmandu. Students from Sacred Heart and Waseda universities partnered with students from National College, and during the program, the partners worked together to collect information from organizations, businesses, schools, and citizens in the community, using questionnaires which we developed before leaving for Nepal. Another unique feature is that students take on a leadership role, both in planning and carrying out the field research. In this way students can experience how to manage and take responsibility for their learning, and also how to cooperate and lead others.

Our Research Focus :   This year we investigated the problems of developing sustainable business practices. We collected information in the capital city of Kathmandu, and in three villages in the Kathmandu Valley, based on the following four sectors:

i. Tourism :   We gathered information on sustainable tourism targeting shop keepers and local people near UNESCO cultural heritage sites. A total of 120 people were interviewed.

ii. Waste Management :   We gathered information from the organization Women’s Environment Preservation Committee (WEPCO), which is an NGO aiming to recycle waste into useful products for society. A total of 65 people were interviewed, including WEPCO members, waste collectors, and householders.

iii. Government Secondary School :   Fifty-one elementary and secondary school students participated in our program on sustainable tourism. The activity involved introducing the children to the concepts of sustainable tourism, followed by research on how sustainable tourism could be introduced in their community. From the findings of their research, the students made a presentation on their plan for sustainable tourism.

iv. Women Farmers :   We investigated the socio-economic livelihood of women farmers. In total, we interviewed 32 women farmers.

Evening Discussions :   We held lively discussions in English every evening. It was a great way for partners to share information with others, and to give their opinions and the information they gathered during the day.
