This course is designed for students who are writing graduation theses on phonetics. We will read a number of articles related to the topics students are interested in. All students are required to read the articles critically, and participate in class discussion. Through reading, we will also study the organization of academic papers, and how writers present phonetic data to support their argument.
Attendance, reading assignments, oral presentation, and term paper.
Preliminary reading and active participation in class discussion.
Examples of topics: -The function of rising tones in English -Gender and pronunciation -Contrastive analysis of English accents -English spoken with Japanese accent -Politeness and pronunciation -Phonetic analysis of loanwords
