This course will focus on gender, race and culture representation in media and literature--most particularly in media and literature that targets children. We will look at various theoretical positions in relation to gender and culture, at the literature of fairytale and folklore and at a number of animated features in order to assess and discuss constructions of role models (sexual, cutural, societal) within media.
Students will be expected to attend every class and to actively participate in discussions and group work. Evaluations will be based on weekly attendance, class participation, presentations and research reports.
All literature materials will be provided through class handouts and further reading materials will be made available in the English Office. A number of DVDs and/or videos will be provided for viewing and analysis. These will include (among others): Aladdin Beauty and the Beast The Bells of Notre Dame Cinderella Hotaru no Haka (Grave of the Fireflies) The Little Mermaid Majo no Takkyubin (Kiki's Delivery Service) Mononoke-hime (Princess Mononoke) Mulan Shrek Snow White
The emphasis in these English classes is on PARTICIPATION. In order to enjoy the class and to get more out of it, it's important to be prepared to talk, to contribute and to get involved--the more you participate, the more you learm!
