To give students a chance to discuss the most current news and social issues in Japan and other countries, to encourage interest in world events, to see events from a global perspective, and improve general English communication skills.
Listening, speaking, reading, and writing related to current events, news topics, and social issues; global thinking; communication skills; development and expression of opinions; research in English.
Students will be given all the necessary materials.
Most important will be steady attendance and a sincere effort to actively participate in the class no matter what your level of English.
Attendance; careful and thoughtful preparation for class discussions; active participation; semester report.
１． This course is conducted entirely in English and ２． will give students further practice in research and communication skills developed in English ３． Communication I. Current events, news, and ４． social issues are used as a basis for reading, listening, discussion, and writing in English. ５． Students will be encouraged to examine issues in ６． a broader context to obtain a global perspective. Skills we will work on include reading and ７． listening for main points, summarization, opinionating, paraphrasing, discussion dynamics. ８． Students will watch video material and use the ９． internet to acquire background information on issues. They will also be given extensive printed 10． materials with comprehension questions and vocabulary building exercises. 11． Final report will be in teams of 4-5 students who 12． will prepare a presentation on a global issue. Efforts will be made to clear up persistent 13． language / grammar problems and to give students individual help with their English. 14． Homework each week to reinforce skills. 15． Topics in English Communication II (2) A will be different from those in II (1) A.
