授業概要
 This is a required course for all Freshmen designed to help them improve the four basic skills in the English language - speaking, listening comprehension, writing, reading comprehension. Students are divided into groups of thirty according to their levels. Class is conducted in English. Global issues are taken up as topics of study. Self - study in the Media Center is also required.
課題・評価
 Reading, preparation for discussion, composition are assigned in each class. Evaluation is based on classwork, quizzes, examination and General Test.

受講生への要望
 Preparation of texts, research on assigned topics, active participation in discussion as well as constant attendance in class are required. Students are also required to use only English in class.

授業計画
1.Chapters of the main text are studied in detail. Students are expected to read and comprehend reading passages, do exercises, and state their opinions. Several chapters are covered in a semester, the number of chapters depending on the level of the group.
2.A sub - text or texts on the subject of each chapter will be studied for deeper understanding of the subject and for further training of the four basic skills.
3.A discussion on the subject of each chapter is conducted. Students must take active part in it in order to exchange ideas with each other and to practice speaking correctly and smoothly.
4.Speeches are sometimes assigned to train students to speak logically with good pronunciation and intonation.
5.Dictation, vocabulary test, quizzes are given often.
6.Paragraph writing is taught in detail, focusing on logical development of a topic as well as grammatical correctness. Students are guided to be able to write acceptable paragraph(s) by the end of the freshman year.
7.Short stories are sometimes read and discussed with an introductory lecture on how to read a short story.
8.The General Test, which checks students' improvement in listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and writing, will be given in the second semester.
