授業概要
 This course is designed to allow students a close examination of various literary works by American writers of the South -- past and present. We will explore topics such as race, gender, relationships, family, social expectations, etc. and consider how these themes are universally applicable and appreciated.
課題・評価
 Weekly reading assignments, in - class writings, and a final examination will be given.

 Weekly reading assignments must be completed before class. Readings, class discussions, and lectures will be in English. Students are expected to participate and to ask questions.

授業計画
 This course is intended to provide students with the opportunity to critically assess literary works by writers from the American South. All elements of fiction -- characters, plot, setting, imagery, etc. will be thoroughly discussed and evaluated.
 Class lectures will include biographical information about each author as well as the historical, social, and political time frame in which each author wrote.
 We will discuss authors and their works from the Pre & Post Revolutionary War Era, the Civil War, the Reconstruction Era, and the Southern Renaissance.
 Authors this semester may include: Thomas Jefferson, Harriet Jacobs, Frederick Douglass, George Washington Cable, Charles W. Chestnutt, Kate Chopin, Mark Twain, etc.
