学習目標
 The short story had a distinct development in America. We will read the best stories by the greatest authors of twentieth-century America. We will learn how to analyze and interpret short fiction and learn the necessary literary terms. Through discussions, we will develop communication and argument skills and deepen our sensitivity to literature.
授業概要
 We will read approximately one story each week. A lecture will be given at the beginning of class on the author and background. 3 to 4 students will be assigned to analyze and discuss each story. Class discussions will follow. Students’ understanding of a few chosen stories will be tested by short tests at the beginning of class. A deeper understanding of certain stories will be tested in the essay exam at the end of the semester.

受講生への要望
 Do research to prepare for your presentations. Read every work carefully in English. Participate actively in the discussions. Take good lecture notes. Class will be conducted in English.
評価方法
 Evaluation will be based on the essay exam, presentation, active class discussion and reading tests.
